A newly claimed identity lifts self-esteem before it stabilizes and the crash afterwards surprises people High self-esteem can be the lid on a fragile identity rather than evidence that the identity is solid Stable identities and steady self-esteem travel together and nobody has settled which one moves first When identity is shaky self-esteem starts tracking other people's reactions instead of your own standard High self-esteem with a badly defined identity is a common combination and the research rarely separates them Defensive self-esteem is usually an identity being protected rather than a feeling being soothed Identity threat hits self-esteem hardest in the people who say their worth does not depend on that domain You cannot raise self-esteem without touching identity and programmes that try produce a good mood with no floor under it Your group's standing leaks into your own self-esteem whether or not you signed up for the group Self-esteem scales and identity scales overlap so heavily that some studies measure one construct twice
